Record low temperatures set in Puget Sound region with more snow showers on tap

After starting the week with snow, the Puget Sound region is now experiencing record low temperatures.

According to the National Weather Service, the coldest temperature Seattle has ever experienced on Feb. 23 was 24 degrees in 2018. By early Wednesday of this week, Feb. 23, Seattle broke that record when it reached 23 degrees at 7 a.m., while temperatures plummeted down into the teens in Tacoma (16 degrees), Shelton (15 degrees), and Olympia (17 degrees). In Sumas, it got as cold as 10 degrees.

By late Wednesday, snow showers are expected to progress through the region from north to south, before wrapping up early Thursday morning, the NWS predicts. Accumulations will be light, and the snow that does end up falling will “also be the drier, more powdery type.”

After that, a “warming trend” will take over later on Thursday, with temperatures set to climb into the low 40s. That will be followed by dry weather headed into the weekend, before a system of lowland rain and mountain snow moves in early next week.

Given the exceptionally cold temperatures, the NWS is urging pet owners to not leave their animals outside. Dogs should also have their paws washed off after returning from walks, as products used to thaw ice on sidewalks may not be pet-friendly.
