Russia TV lists naval radio station near Arlington as nuclear target

Feb 27, 2019, 7:26 AM

A Russian TV news broadcast Sunday identified a list of U.S. locations as potential targets for nuclear missiles, and one of the sites is a naval radio station near Arlington.

The Daily Herald reports Naval Radio Station Jim Creek was one of five sites listed on the weekly news show “Vesti Nedeli.” The radio station started in 1953 to assist communications with the Pacific fleet. It is among the most powerful transmitters in the world.

The other targets mentioned were the Pentagon, Camp David, Fort Ritchie in Maryland and McClellan Air Force Base in California.

But experts like retired Air Force Lt. Colonel and University of Washington Professor Hal Undem say there is nothing too concerning about the report.

“There’s nothing really that I would panic about,” Undem told KIRO 7. “…They’re telling the American government, I think, that look, ‘if you can get to us in 5-10 minutes, we’ve got a way to do that too.’ And that is just old school, Cold War rhetoric.”

“If you don’t have a (bomb shelter) already, then don’t go get one,” he said.

KIRO 7’s Gary Horcher noted that the man appointed by the Russian state to make the report which lists the targets lost some credibility when he listed two other military base targets that are closed.
