Western Washington’s first major storm of the season is expected to bring snow to the mountains this weekend.

“We’re expecting about half an inch to maybe two inches of accumulation, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Samantha Borth. “Right now we’re recommending that hikers and anyone recreating outdoors in higher terrain pay attention to the forecast over the weekend.”

The accumulation is expected to impact the Cascade and Olympic regions above 6,000 feet of elevation. The snowfall is expected to start Saturday and go through the weekend. According to the National Weather Service, the snow will not impact pass level.

The snow comes as part of a storm expected to hit Western Washington Friday night. A fall-like front will bring moderate to heavy rain, and the lowlands can expect to see up to and exceeding and inch of rain. The National Weather Service expects the region to see thunderstorms and possible lightning.

Hikers and other recreationists should plan for cold temperatures and high elevation snow Saturday and Sunday.
