Seattle bridges to get cooling baths during heat wave

Extreme heat can cause damage to roads and bridges, according to the Seattle Department of Transportation.

To prevent damage like sink holes or fissures, crews will spray down bridges with water during the weekend heat wave.
“This is necessary because the high temperatures can cause the steel to expand and potentially create problems for opening and closing functions,” wrote in a release.
Crews will use cooling trucks full of water, mixed with a small amount of Vitamin C to neutralize chlorine in potable water, to give the University, Fremont and Ballard bridges an occasional shower.
Each bridge will close for a few minutes at least twice a day Saturday-Monday afternoon. Work will generally take place between 12 p.m – 5 p.m.
SDOT also has tips for drivers in extreme heat: make sure your vehicle is in good working condition and is fueled up, and if you’re stuck, get help right away and run the A/C. And never leave pets or children in a car with the windows rolled up.
