How will City Light select the charger locations?

Good news for those who are considering owning an electric vehicle but don’t know where to charge it. Seattle City Light will install public Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) chargers at curbside locations in your Seattle neighborhood for free.

Here’s where you can request one.

Seattle City Light will install a public Level 2 charging station next to a curb in a residential neighborhood. Seattle City will own, operate and maintain the EV chargers.

Market expert: Consumer confidence in electric vehicles is on the rise

Keep in mind these chargers will be public to anyone who drives an electric vehicle. Drivers will be able to park on the street next to the charger and charge their vehicle on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations will not be accepted.

All chargers under the program will offer up to 9.6 kilowatts and can provide over 30 miles of range per hour of charge time.

According to Seattle City Light, they will assume “all costs related to the purchase and installation of the chargers. There is no cost to the resident or property owner to request or install a public curbside Level 2 EV charger. Drivers will need to pay a per kilowatt-hour (kWh) fee to use the chargers.

The 2021 fee for Seattle City Light-operated Level 2 EV chargers is $0.20 per kWh (2022 fees will be released at a later date). One kWh provides a typical EV with enough energy to travel over three miles.

The fees are designed to pay for the electricity, operations, maintenance and repair costs while offsetting the initial purchase and installation costs.”

How will City Light select the charger locations?

An opt-in-process is how City Light will select charger locations. If you are interested in a charger in front of your house, and if the location meets the program requirements, you can request a charger.

City Light will then determine each request based on the criteria, location, and other parameters invested in their plan, however, do keep in mind that “City Light will not install the charging station if more than 50% of the neighboring property owners voice opposition.”

Here are the minimum requirements for a Level 2 EV Charging requirements.
