Seattle police warn of spiked drinks at Capitol Hill bars

The Seattle Police Department is telling people to be on their guard after an increase in concern of people drugging drinks at Capitol Hill bars.

“We’ve heard a number of community concerns and reports on social media that there has been an increase, and concern, of the possibility that drinks are being tampered with at nightclubs in Seattle,” said Sergeant Sean Whitcomb with the Seattle Police Department.

“We’ve heard the concerns and we’ve seen some police reports coming in,” he said. “This has heightened our concern.”

SPD has been receiving multiple reports from bars and nightclubs, primarily on Capitol Hill, that unknown individuals have been secretly spiking the drinks of customers. After dosing a drink, anyone who consumes it could become incapacitated. The practice has been associated with sexual assault. Seattle police say they have not received any definitive reports of such instances at Capitol Hill bars, but is asking for help identifying unreported cases.

Anyone who suspects their drink could have been drugged is urged to contact Seattle police. Detectives also suggest that if you do suspect you have been a victim of such a crime, you should see a medical provider in case any evidence can be obtained.

Not isolated to Capitol Hill bars

Sergeant Whitcomb notes that this is not just an issue for Capitol Hill bars.

“This does not have to be limited to any one neighborhood in Seattle,” Whitcomb said. “We have a number of nightlife destinations in Seattle, all over the city.”

SPD has already held meetings with Capitol Hill bars, including security staff, to discuss the problem with sexual assault detectives.

“Everyone has everyone’s back on this,” Whitcomb said. “We want to make sure that the reputation we have for an awesome nightlife in Seattle is not tarnished by these reports of possible some bad actors out committing crimes.”

“This is a very serious offense,” he said. “If you think you are going to slip someone something and get away with it, think twice. You are looking at a felony. If there is a sexual assault attached to it, that will be investigated, you will be held accountable. And if convicted, you will have to register as a sex offender.”

Seattle police are also advising nightlife patrons to be safe with some common methods — have a sober friend along.

“Be aware that these concerns have been raised,” Whitcomb said. “Go in with a strategy. If you’re planning on having a good time, make sure you have somebody there that is sober. Have a friend – a designated driver and guardian.”

Seattle police stress that a person should never accept a drink from someone they do not know, and should never leave their drink unattended. Also, report any suspicious activity while out on the town.
