Seattle will soon receive $20 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation to improve mobility and safety along East Marginal Way South.

Seattle’s roadside artifacts whisper of phantom highways

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg highlighted Seattle’s project in a video on Twitter explaining the RAISE grants. RAISE stands for Rebuilding America’s Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity.

“This year’s winners will receive money to fund projects that improve transportation in communities across the country,” Buttigieg explained, and then he highlighted the project in Seattle.

The Seattle Department of Transportation was awarded the RAISE grant in November 2021.

“We’re awarding $20 million to help Seattle reconstruct over a mile of their East Marginal Way roadway. This roadway is part of a major freight corridor that provides access to the Port of Seattle, rail yards, industrial businesses, and the regional highway system,” Buttigieg said in the video. “These improvements will help ensure that freight keeps moving, while at the same time making it safer for workers to get to and from their jobs.”

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan thanked Secretary Buttigieg and the U.S. DOT for “supporting upgrades to East Marginal Way to improve safety while moving people and goods more efficiently.”

20 months into the closure, workers return to West Seattle Bridge

Under the Biden administration, SDOT says it has received over $135 million in federal funding for key city projects.
