Seattle food lovers freaking out over abrupt closure of Seattle’s Paseo sandwich shop

Local food lovers are freaking out after word surfaced Tuesday Seattle’s Paseo sandwich shops had abruptly shut down.
Paseo’s Cuban sandwiches have consistently been voted Seattle’s best and among the best in the nation – with Yelp naming it second best eatery in America overall.
There’s no word why the seemingly successful restaurants in Fremont and Ballard – with the ever present lines wrapping around the block – suddenly went out of business.
A sign on the door reads:
“Due to unfortunate circumstances, we are closing our doors.
We appreciate all the support and loyalty you have shown us over the years. We will miss you.
Thank you,
The Paseo Crew”
One reason for the closure could be a lawsuit filed in June by several Mexican employees. They allege the owners cheated them out of wages, refused to pay them overtime, denied them breaks despite making them work 12 hours or more at a time, and then fired them after they complained.
From the reaction online and in our newsroom, you’d think the world had come to end. For some foodies, it just might have.
“This is awful. I feel like I lost a friend today. Sandwiches can be friends too right?” wrote one commenter on Reddit, pretty much summing up the collective grief.
