Seattle garbage pickup delay extended after more snow arrives Thursday

Garbage cans overflowing with gift wrap, spoiled leftovers, and general holiday detritus will remain in place for most of Seattle as the city wrestles with a winter snow storm that left a further 1 to 3 inches Thursday in the middle of an unprecedented freeze.

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has suspended much of its garbage pick up until after the new year, citing “icy and unsafe conditions on many residential streets and hills, along with potential additional snow,” in a recent news release.

Collection schedules should resume as follows:

• Monday (12/27) residential customers will be collected Monday (1/3)
• Tuesday (12/28) residential customers will be collected Tuesday (1/4)
• Wednesday (12/29) residential customers will be collected Wednesday (1/5)
• Thursday (12/30) residential customers will be collected Friday (12/31), if conditions allow.
• Friday (12/31) residential customers will be collected Friday (1/7) due to the holiday on 1/1.

With their subsequent collection, customers will be allowed to double their normal amount of garbage, recycling, and yard waste for no additional charge.

If frozen streets persist, SPU will collect the day following their scheduled arrival.

Commercial and multifamily collections will continue as conditions allow. Transfer stations and the Household Hazardous Waste Facility will remain open with normal hours.
