Seattle is on the short-list of the 23 destinations across the continent to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Wednesday morning, FIFA announced that the US, Canada, and Mexico will host the next World Cup. The three nations will all co-host the event. It’s the first time the World Cup has been in North America since 1994.
“I, along with many others, will strongly make the case that our metropolitan region has the world-class venues, transit infrastructure, accommodations, and passionate soccer community to make this a success,” King County Executive Dow Constantine said Wednesday. “Generations of homegrown fans, and enthusiasts from across the globe, are eager for our once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to welcome the world’s game in 2026.”
The Seattle Sounders, along with Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan, King County Executive Dow Constantine and other leaders made an official announcement Wednesday afternoon about the possibility of the World Cup coming to town.
FIFA will make the final selection of host cities from the candidates proposed in the United Bid.
