Seattle mayor to announce safety improvements for pedestrians

Seattle city leaders will unveil their updated plan to keep pedestrians safe Monday.
Mayor Ed Murray and Seattle Department of Transportation officials will unveil an updated pedestrian master plan included in their Vision Zero safety plan, which aims for no pedestrian accidents in a year.
In November, city officials lowered speed limits on arterials from 30 to 25 mph as part of the plan.
Neighbors near certain intersections have been calling for safety improvements.
One dangerous intersection is in Seattle’s Roosevelt neighborhood at NE 65th Street and Roosevelt Way NE, where there have been more than 60 crashes in a year.
The intersection has been marked with ghost bikes — memorials to cyclists who have been hit and killed there.
Drivers who live in the area know they need to be careful.
“You actually have to watch where you are going, you got to play a lot of defense you can’t just play offense walking or driving,” said neighbor Mick Juarez.
Murray will be joined by Seattle City Council members and the SDOT director at 12:30 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School at 6725 45th Ave S.
