Heavy rain could bring Seattle’s wettest day of the entire year

Dec 16, 2019, 10:41 PM

The Seattle area is approaching one of its rainiest periods of the year, with up to three inches of rain over a 72 hour period set to descend on the region Wednesday.

Little chance of Christmas snow in Seattle

“Very wet weather is expected later this week,” said the National Weather Service.

That could all potentially culminate in the rainiest day Seattle has seen all year.

“Seattle could see 3 [inches] of rain in this timespan, with the potential for Thurs[day] to become the wettest day of 2019,” said Seattle Weather Blog’s Justin Shaw.

The number to beat would be Feb. 11, when 1.22 inches of precipitation fell in the Seattle area.

Seattle winter could be much snowier than usual

If Seattle does get three inches of rain between Wednesday and Friday, that single three-day period would beat out the entire month of November, when SeaTac (where Seattle’s rainfall is measured) got just 1.71 inches of rain. That was also the driest November Seattle has seen in over 40 years.

The NWS warns that flooding is a risk for anyone living near rivers this week, with areas outside of Seattle near the Olympics likely to get as many as six inches of rain. You can stay updated on flood warnings and river levels here.
