7 sickened with gastrointestinal illness after dining at Seattle sushi restaurant

Seven cases of gastrointestinal (stomach) illnesses were reported after eating at a downtown Seattle sushi restaurant, Sushi%AYCE/All You Can Eat.
The restaurant, located at 660 S. King Street, had seven people report sicknesses after eating at the establishment on May 16, Public Health — Seattle & King County announced.
Health officials were unable to pinpoint a specific food or drink item that may have caused the illness.
Seven consumers at the restaurant reported becoming sick with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, chills, body aches, fever, and headaches. No restaurant workers reported any signs of gastrointestinal illnesses.

Five sickened people were interviewed to provide more information about their symptoms and what they ate, though Public Health — Seattle & King County did not provide the details.
On June 10, health officials visited the restaurant and identified food safety issues that could have contributed to the outbreak, including:
- Workers not washing their hands or changing gloves when switching between raw and ready-to-eat foods.
- One handwashing station did not have hot water, and the others lacked basic supplies such as paper towels.
- No sanitizer ready for use in the food preparation or dishwashing areas.
- Utensils and surfaces used to prepare food were not cleaned properly.
- Ready-to-eat fruits and vegetables were cut and served without first being washed.
- Ready-to-eat foods were stored without date labels, leaving staff unable to know how long items had been kept or when they needed to be thrown out.
Public Health — Seattle & King County offered education on how the restaurant could fix the issues, and during a follow-up inspection on June 22, all of the food safety issues had been corrected.
Sushi%AYCE/All You Can Eat’s current inspection rating is “Okay.”
