Seattle will move Jungle residents to new ‘holding’ camp in SoDo

The City of Seattle is not giving details until next week, but what is known is that residents of the infamous Jungle will soon be moved out.

KOMO News reports that the city will explain its plan next week. That plan will take homeless residents from under and around I-5 through Seattle, and move them to a temporary “holding” camp near Safeco Field. Residents of the camp have already been told about the city’s plan to move them.

The city and the state reportedly had been working on a deal to address the Jungle. That deal will move campers onto a plot of city land in SoDo at Royal Brougham Way and Airport Way. There is already a small homeless camp at that location. Seattle has begun installing portable toilets and trash bins at the site.

A year into the Jungle

The Jungle has existed in one form or another for decades. The out-of-sight location has served as a place for homeless residents to set up camp. It also put them out of mind, and in turn everything from human trafficking to drug dealing and abuse, and other crimes have become rampant in the area. It recently emerged back into public awareness in early 2016 when a multiple shooting and murder was carried out in the camp. The crime was allegedly committed by teenage brothers over a drug deal.

Since then the city has struggled with what to do with the residents left in the area. Mayor Ed Murray initially set a deadline to evict the campers. But he soon went back on that decision.
