Seattle to shut down ‘brain’ next weekend

Aug 27, 2012, 6:32 AM | Updated: 8:05 am

If you want to pay a parking ticket or renew your pet license in Seattle next weekend, don’t bother trying. The city is giving its “brain” the weekend off.

The city is planning to shut down many of its computer servers stored in the Seattle Municipal Tower for maintenance.

City officials say they have to fix a power transmission problem causing overheating, causing a series of shutdowns between 6 p.m. Friday and the following Tuesday.

The shutdown will not impact 9-1-1 dispatching or other essential services. Utility customers still will be able to pay bills online to Seattle City Light and Seattle Public Utilities.

The repairs will cost $2.1 million.

In addition to the partial shutdown, the city says Neighborhood Service Centers will be closed on Saturday. The Seattle Animal Shelter will be open but will not be able to issue or renew pet licenses while the data center is shut down.
