Seattle’s park proposition passing in early election results

Aug 6, 2014, 6:12 AM | Updated: 6:13 am

Proposition 1, to create a park district in Seattle, is passing in early election results Tuesday.

Voters are 52 percent in favor of forming a park district, 48 percent against with over 99,000 ballots counted so far.

Prop. 1 says the new district would fund, maintain, operate and improve parks with city councilmembers at the helm.

The district could levy property taxes, currently limited to 75 cents per $1,000 of valuation.

KIRO Radio host Jason Rantz said he expected something as progressive as steady funding for parks in Seattle would do well on the ballot. “While it’s still early, we’re only talking about 26 percent (of ballots counted,) the fact that it is so tight, can really mean that the election can go either way.”

Results will be updated today at 4:30 p.m., and you can find them on MyNorthwest.
