Those thinking about harvesting shellfish will want to wait.

Paralytic shellfish poison has been detected from Alki Beach to Dash Point State Park, and all along eastern Vashon-Maury Island, including Quartermaster Harbor, Public Health – Seattle and King County reported.

So for now, the state has shut down recreational harvesting in those areas. Exact closure locations can be viewed on the Washington State Department of Health’s (DOH) safety map.

People can become ill from eating shellfish contaminated with paralytic shellfish poison as the biotoxin affects the nervous system and paralyzes muscles, according to the DOH. However, the shellfish won’t look or taste different than safe shellfish.

Symptoms of eating paralytic shellfish poison

Early symptoms, DOH stated, include tingling of the lips and tongue, which may start within minutes or hours after eating the shellfish. Symptoms can progress to tingling fingers and toes and then a loss of control of arms and legs, followed by difficulty breathing. Some people may feel nauseous or experience a sense of floating.

If someone eats contaminated shellfish and has mild symptoms, officials recommend calling a healthcare provider. If symptoms are severe, call 911.
