The Seattle Police Department (SPD) is investigating a fatal collision in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood.

A shuttle van collided with two elderly women in a designated smoking spot Tuesday at Broadway and Alder Street, one block away from Harborview Medical Center, according to SPD Blotter.

Shuttle van kills 2 elderly women

Two people were reported dead after the shuttle van hit them.

SPD patrol officers responded to a report stating that a shuttle van had hit two elderly women just after 10:30 a.m., according to SPD Blotter.

The victims are estimated to be between 70 and 80 years old, according to KOMO News.

Seattle Fire Department (SFD) responded to the scene and initiated life-saving efforts on one victim, but both people were declared dead at the scene.

A third victim was also inside the shelter but was able to escape without injury, according to SPD Blotter.

“When reversing, the vehicle struck two elderly women, killing them. However, a third woman narrowly escaped the crash and she was not injured,” SPD Detective Eric Munoz said.

The driver of the shuttle van is currently cooperating with police, and a certified Drug Recognition Expert evaluated the driver and found no signs of impairment, SPD Blotter stated.

“The person driving the van stayed at the scene. Investigators are talking to them to figure out what occurred. There is talk that there could be a mechanical problem with the vehicle,” SPD Detective Brian Pritchard said.

KIRO Newsradio is en route to the scene and will provide updates with more information as it becomes available.
