The Halloween costume sales are in full swing and so are complaints many of the outfits for young girls are overly sexual.
Among the offerings drawing ire are the Indian Princess Tween costume sold by Spirit Halloween stores.
“In this cute Indian princess costume tween costume it’ll be a snap to lead the boys back to your tipi,” the ad trumpets.
“This is for 12 and 13-year-olds,” laments KIRO Radio news anchor and parent Kim Shepard, who says the annual offering of short-skirted school girls and other outfits are turning younger and younger kids into sluts.
“I’m really trying to get my kids into scary movies and ghoulish stuff so they’ll want to dress up as the scary thing for Halloween, rather than the slutty thing,” Shepard says.
Another outfit drawing Shepard’s ire is one modeled after the popular Monster High dolls.
“It’s a very, very tight top and very, very short skirt with punkish pink and blue wig for hair. But the thing about it is this it is in size small, which would be like for a 6-year-old.”
“So they wear that and next year they can go out as a teenage pregnant girl,” says KIRO Radio’s John Curley. “You sexualize a girl at about seven, you make them aware of their sexuality at seven and then you can sell them stuff all the way up to about 17. It’s a much bigger window to sell them stuff.”
