Residents in parts of Snohomish County woke up to a flurry of snow Monday, after a Winter Weather Advisory was in effect through the early morning hours.

The weather advisory spanned Burlington, Mount Vernon, Sedro-Woolley, La Conner, Conway, Everett, Lynnwood, and Marysville, with several inches of snow accumulating by the time it ended at 9 a.m.

Steve Reedy with the National Weather Service told KIRO Newsradio that the islands were hit hardest.

“It lingered over Whidbey for quite a while — anywhere from 4-6 inches,” Reedy said. “For Snohomish County, it was a little bit less than that, maybe 1-3 in some of the higher elevation locations.”

Around 5 a.m., enough snow had already fallen to cover roads, making for a tough early commute. The National Weather Service advised drivers to slow down, increase following distance behind other vehicles, and stay alert.

Monday snow coincided with a widespread power outage, still impacting roughly 5,500 Snohomish County PUD customers as of 2 p.m. The outage has been largely concentrated north of Marysville and on the southern half of Camano Island.

For the rest of the Puget Sound region, this week could bring a potentially record-breaking cold snap.

“Outdoor pipes could be at risk for bursting, so make sure to insulate them. Hopefully this will be winter’s last gasp,” Reedy said.

Daily highs will stay in the 30s as cold winds blow in from British Columbia. Overnight low temperatures will likely be in the 20s, potentially dipping into the teens in some places. By the end of the week, the NWS expects daily records for low temperatures to be set.

“Puyallup and Tacoma, we could see them in the high teens. And as you go a little bit closer to the mountains, we could see mid-teens there,” Reedy noted.

Temperatures are expected to start plummeting Tuesday night. Seattle is forecast to reach the low 20s, which would break the previous record set in 2018.
