Some snow into the Puget Sound region overnight

Friday snow is always a little bit different than Monday through Thursday snow. Monday through Thursday snow is mostly an inconvenience. Friday snow loads up the ski resorts, looks festive on the lawns, and is generally part of the holiday wonder. All this is to say that we’re going to have Friday snow.

All is good except for the afternoon commute, which will be a little tricky with snow flurries and icy roads.

The Washington Department of Transportation says their trucks are out in full force, but it may be a while until they get to the sidestreets.

“Occasional light snow through tonight turning to rain below 400 feet about Tacoma south,” said KIRO Newsradio meteorologist Ted Buehner. “Highs today will be between 35-40. Most of the region will see a trace to three inches of snow except around the Hood Canal where more than six inches is expected.”

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for parts of King and Pierce Counties, west to Bremerton and north to the Skagit/Whatcom County line, including Seattle.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Seattle/Tacoma reports the impact of Friday’s snow will be minor traffic delays and compact snow and ice on roadways.

NWS said the highest amounts of snow will be over the Olympic mountains and adjacent Kitsap County.

“Most of the day looks mostly dry outside of a few random showers ahead of the main front for tonight, especially in the Hood Canal,” KIRO 7 meteorologist Nick Allard writes in his blog. “Highs will bump into the upper-30s and lower-40s.”

Nick said another weather system moves in tonight. “This is going to be weaker and centered a little farther offshore than Tuesday’s weather system, but we’ll watch for accumulating snow tonight, mainly west of Puget Sound.

“We could see 2-8″ of snow, with around 4-6″ around Hoodsport to Seabeck and around 1-3″ for the rest of that area.”

Many people will be heading up to the summits as ski and snowboard season opens.

Also, weekend trips across the passes will require some careful planning.

Make sure you check the conditions before you leave.

“The weekend will be dry with increasing sun on Saturday,” Nick reports. “Clouds to increase Sunday with the potential for a few showers Sunday night, but we should be mostly dry.”
