Seattle Police adding new emphasis patrols in U-District

A series of shootings in Seattle’s University District over the past month has left many in the community worried about safety in the area. In order to combat rising gun violence, the Seattle Police Department (SPD) will be adding new emphasis patrols in the area.
According to a post from their crime blotter, SPD has responded to four major shooting incidents in the University District over the course of the past month, culminating in a shooting that injured five University of Washington students Sunday night.
UW students call for more police after trying to defund them
- Sept. 23 — At 1 p.m., officers were called to the 4700 Block of 7th Ave NE after a man was shot and wounded.
- Sept. 28 — Officers responded to the 4200 block of 11 Ave NE at 10 p.m. after a man discovered a bullet hole and bullet in his bathtub
- Oct. 1 — At 12:05 AM, police responded to reports of gunfire in the 4200 block of Brooklyn Ave NE. A motorist, believed to be fleeing the gunfire, struck and killed a pedestrian.
- Oct. 2 — Police were called to investigate a shooting and fight outside a club at University Way NE & NE 43rd St. The suspect fired several shots into the crowd, striking four victims before fleeing the scene.
Police are investigating these incidents, but no arrests have been made.
Police Chief Adrian Diaz is assigning emphasis patrols to the area in addition to SPD’s current 911 response there.
“You know, public safety is what we’re really concerned about. And so when we do see something like this, it is our job to get out there and address it,” Sgt. John O’Neil with Seattle Police said in an interview with KIRO 7.
