Special Olympics Washington held their annual Spring Games on the University of Puget Sound campus in Tacoma and the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

About 1,400 athletes from all 39 counties across the state participated in a variety of sports, offering opportunities for participants of all ages, from 2 to 72, with a wide range of disabilities. The games included soccer, track and field events, and swimming.

Another 2,000 volunteers, including coaches, medical assistants, and chaperones, supported the athletes, as well as family and friends.

Opening ceremonies were held on Friday evening at Tacoma’s Cheney Stadium before the Tacoma Rainiers baseball game. A parade of athletes marched around the field, culminating in the lighting of the Olympic cauldron to the delight of fans. Following the fireworks after the game, one athlete excitedly said, “That was the best night of my life!”

Friday’s cool showers gave way to sunshine and mild temperatures Saturday and Sunday, providing fine weather conditions for the Games.

The athletes inspired everyone. Fans, volunteers, and coaches enthusiastically cheered on the competitors. At the awards, the John Williams Olympic Games Theme was played as medals were awarded to bronze, silver, and gold medal winners.

Meals were provided by donations and a wide number of sponsors.

Special Olympics spring games cap off with Seahawks-themed dance

The Spring Games also included a dance on Saturday, with about 2,000 attending. The dance theme involved the Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks. Many dressed in Seahawks colors. The slogan was ‘Our Champions Celebrate the Seahawks Champions’. Some women wore dazzling gowns, and a few men were attired in suits or cowboy gear, ready for a variety of dance steps, including line dancing and Congo lines.

Emergency Management Group – Washington, staffed the emergency operations center on the campus, providing coordination of safety, medical, and security services for all the games events. I was the staff meteorologist providing weather information support, serving with this group since the 2018 USA Special Olympic Games held in the Seattle area.

For over 50 years, the Special Olympics Spring Games have offered hope and spirit for all. The athletes enjoyed the competition and camaraderie, all while having a fun, life-changing experience.
