Highway 16 in Tacoma was closed early Sunday morning because of a high-speed chase to apprehend a reckless driver.
A Washington State Patrol Officer reported that the chase started after midnight near the King County Line when the trooper tried to stop a Honda Prelude that was speeding at 130 mph. The trooper pursued the vehicle as it turned around and drove north in the southbound lanes on Interstate 5 into Tacoma.
The driver crashed on Interstate 5 near Bay Street and began ramming the trooper’s car. That’s when the trooper opened fire, wounding the driver in the hand.
The driver took off, exiting onto Highway 16. The 23-year-old driver was stopped soon afterwards and arrested after he was treated at a nearby hospital.
The trooper was not injured.
