Steven Powell seeks to overturn $1.8 million judgment awarded young voyeurism victims

Nov 5, 2013, 5:52 PM | Updated: 10:09 pm

Convicted voyeur Steven Powell is trying to fight a $1.8 million judgment awarded the two young neighbor girls he spied on and photographed in their Puyallup bathroom, the girl’s attorney confirmed Tuesday.

A judge had granted the judgment in a civil suit filed by attorney Anne Bremner on behalf of the girls. Although he’s been in prison since June 2012, Bremner says he has plenty of resources to help pay it.

“He has homeowners insurance, he has a home in Puyallup. He had a full time job, ironically with the Department of Corrections.”

Powell was convicted on 14 counts of voyeurism. The Department of Corrections announced last month he would be released in November, but then rescinded his release plan after a property owner withdrew an offer to have him as a tenant.

Powell is the father-in-law of Susan Cox Powell, the Puyallup native who disappeared from her home in Utah in 2009. His son Josh killed himself and his two young sons in 2012.

Bremner, who also represents Susan’s parents Chuck and Judy, says every move Powell makes just extends the pain they have felt since her disappearance.

“For my clients all the way around they just want to put this behind us and see some justice.”

Steven Powell has also made a claim for proceeds from a $3.5 million life insurance policy Josh Powell took out on Susan soon before her disappearance. Josh was investigated as a person of interest in the case but never charged.
