A man is in custody Friday morning after stealing a vehicle near Bothell and riding around the Lake Washington area — managing to evade a police spike strip in the process — ultimately driving in the wrong direction on State Route 520.

Just after 5 a.m., Bothell Police Department reported a stolen vehicle.

The stolen vehicle took off in the wrong direction on State Route 522 near Highway 9. Troopers attempted to immobilize the vehicle with a spike strip, which “did not work,” according to a spokesperson with Washington State Patrol.

The vehicle then continued southbound, taking the exit to eastbound SR 520. Troopers then attempted a “pit maneuver,” where a police vehicle attempts to spin out another, which was also unsuccessful. The state patrol vehicle that attempted the immobilization tactic became disabled.

The stolen vehicle then continued westbound on eastbound SR 520.

Another trooper observed the vehicle traveling in the wrong direction, ultimately disabling the vehicle. The alleged vehicle thief proceeded to flee on foot, but was arrested after a “short foot pursuit.”

SR 520 is fully open after state patrol closed two lanes for just under two hours.
