Studies that linked alcohol to higher risks of breast cancer may only be telling part of the story.

A new study looked at about 5,000 women with breast cancer found that alcohol actually increased their survival rate. The study said it didn’t matter whether women drank before they were diagnosed or after.

Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle think the lower mortality rate may have something to do with the cardiovascular benefits of alcohol – and wine in particular.

Women who had three to six drinks per week were found to have nearly a 50 percent lower mortality rate from heart disease, a major cause of death among breast cancer survivors.

The complete study can be found in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
