Suspect accused of killing Bothell Police officer is being held without bail

The man accused of killing Bothell Police Officer Jonathan Shoop and wounding another officer is being held without bail.

“The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office asked that he be held without bail, and a judge agreed,” said Casey McNerthney, a spokesperson for the King County Prosecutor’s Office.
The suspect is being held in King County Jail on investigation of first-degree murder, first-degree assault, vehicular assault and attempting to elude.
McNerthney said there should be a charging decision by Friday. The suspect will remain in jail in the interim.
Shoop was shot and killed Monday night, following a chase that began when officers attempted to pull over a black sedan on SR 522.
The driver refused to stop when ordered by police, hitting a pedestrian, and running into the center median. The suspect then exited their car, fired a gun at officers, and ran on foot away from the scene.
“During the interview with detectives after he was arrested, he did admit that he was the one driving the Pontiac, that he had driven away from the traffic stop. As well, he admitted to hitting the pedestrian and shooting at the officers,” said Everett Police Officer Aaron Snell, part of the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team, which is investigating the crime.
After a lengthy search, the suspect was found hiding on a rooftop, and was taken into custody “without incident” shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday.
According to court documents, the suspect “described his actions in defense of himself against law enforcement taking his vehicle, marijuana, and firearm.”
The second officer involved in the incident suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Both the surviving officer and the pedestrian were taken to Harborview Medical Center, with the latter in satisfactory condition. The officer was treated and released from the hospital Tuesday morning.
