A man accused of hitting a family crossing the street in Seattle’s Wedgwood neighborhood pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in King County Superior Court Thursday morning.

Mark Mullan, 50, is charged with homicide, vehicular assault, and reckless driving. He is being held on $2.5 million bail. If convicted, he would face 15 to 19 years in prison.

Police say Mullan’s blood-alcohol level was .22, more than twice the legal limit when he allegedly killed Dennis and Judith Schulte, and injured their daughter-in-law and grandchild in the March 25 collision.

Hundreds of friends and family packed a high school in the Schulte’s Indiana hometown for a memorial Wednesday night.

“If we can learn anything from this tragedy it is that choices we make daily affect the people around us. Every person must have accountability and responsibility to their fellow citizens,” a family friend told WRTV.

The Schulte’s daughter-in-law, 33-year-old Karina Ulriksen-Schulte and her infant son, Elias, were critically injured and remain in Harborview Medical Center.

Mullan has a record of five previous DUI arrests.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
