A Tacoma police officer is in stable condition after being shot in the shoulder during an incident Wednesday afternoon involving two juvenile suspects, authorities report.

Tacoma Police Department spokesperson Officer Shelbie Boyd noted in a press release Wednesday the incident began when officers attempted to contact the occupants of a vehicle driving erratically after it stopped. The vehicle’s occupants fled and fired upon the officers.

The shots fired led to a detective being struck in the shoulder by gunfire. He was then transported to a local hospital.

Officers from multiple law-enforcement agencies converged on the area to assist in the apprehension of the armed suspects.

Later, two juveniles, a 14- and a 15-year-old, were located and taken into custody on the 1700 block of South 95th Street. They were booked on the charge of attempted murder, Boyd said in her statement.

The detective, a 27-year veteran of the department, remains in stable condition in an area hospital.

Boyd concluded her statement by saying that detectives and crime scene technicians are on the scene and the investigation is ongoing.
