The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County is taking in dozens of cats and kittens that were found living in the same home, with some of the cats living inside walls.

On Nov. 30, members of Tacoma Animal Control began bringing cats from the home to the shelter. As of Monday, the shelter had taken in 27 of the cats, and more are arriving daily.

The shelter plans on taking in more than 40 felines that were inside the home.

They range in age from newborn kittens to adults. Many of the animals are scared and undersocialized, and some have medical issues.

Five kittens are being treated for upper respiratory infections. One adult cat is in critical condition.

Two newborns died shortly after arriving at the shelter, despite staff’s efforts to warm them in an incubator, according to the Humane Society.

In addition, on Monday, the shelter also took in 10, eight-week-old German shepherd puppies that were found abandoned next to a Lakewood business. They are being examined by the shelter’s veterinary team.

With the two recent cases of numerous animals needing urgent care, along with the shelter’s ongoing care of neglected and abandoned pets, donations are needed.

Through Dec. 31, a friend of the shelter is triple-matching all donations — up to $50,000 — made to the shelter. Donations can be made at https://www.thehumanesociety.org/cat-rescue/.

On a brighter note, a rescue puppy from Seattle Humane Society, Cooper, will be playing in Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl XIX on Feb. 12, 2023.

The three-hour show features adoptable puppies and highlights the work of rescue and shelter workers.

This year’s show will feature 122 puppies, 67 shelters, and rescues across 34 states.
