Tacoma zoo tiger won’t care for newborn

The Point Defiance Zoo says a newborn baby tiger they didn’t know was coming is a girl, and zookeepers will have to care for it because the mother isn’t interested.

Keepers found the newborn Sumatran tiger cub Wednesday morning in a nest box. But staffers admit they had no idea its mother Jaya was even pregnant.

The News Tribune reports Jaya didn’t act pregnant and the they had even performed several ultrasounds on the mother to be in the past few weeks.

Mom and baby are both doing fine, although Jaya doesn’t seem to want to be much of a mother. That’s little surprise. Jaya showed little interest in her previous cub Dumai, now 8 months old. Zookeepers bottle fed the tiger until it was big enough to eat on its own.
