David Law’s journey: A British tennis voice turned Seahawks superfan

About seven years ago, Law was walking through London during an NFL International Game. His family made a pact: everyone picks a team to follow. His wife chose the Texans. His daughter took the Vikings—apparently, she likes the purple. His son grabbed the Rams.

“I don’t know why I chose the Seattle Seahawks, to be quite honest with you,” Law said. “I think maybe the colors. I think I loved the sort of navy blue — navy blue and white is the color of my British soccer team, West Bromwich Albion. And then I loved the sort of the green, which was a little bit similar to The Tennis Podcast logo color. And I just thought, ‘okay, I’m gonna go for the Seattle Seahawks.'”

One by one, his family lost interest. But for Law, the obsession grew. He dove into Seahawks history during the pandemic and studied the team’s Super Bowl trips during the Legion of Boom era.

Law predicted great things for the Seahawks back in October. Heading into their Monday night matchup against the Houston Texans, the Hawks were 4-2. On the podcast, Law said the “Seahawks are four and two and going in the right direction and Super Bowl bound.”

Law settles in for Thursday Night/Friday Morning football

Last week, he settled in for Thursday Night Football. Although for Law, it was Friday morning.

“This is four in the morning, my time, and I’m there live,” Law said. “I’m there on my own in the living room, wearing all my Seahawks gear, you know? I mean, it seems a bit ridiculous.”

But not as ridiculous as what it took for the Hawks to pull out that win: three two-point conversions, including one involving a backward pass, and the one to win the game in OT.

“I came away from it thinking, you know, if that had been the Super Bowl, I think I might have just witnessed one of the greatest sporting comebacks in history, in any sport.”

But the comeback started with a punt return touchdown from Rashid Shaheed.

“The way the sound came through the TV when Shaheed scored the touchdown return, and you just started to feel this momentum,” Law said. “It felt irresistible.”

Law remains confident the Hawks will be representing the NFC in Super Bowl LX.

“I don’t even think we’ve seen the best of the Seahawks yet,” he said. “I think the defense, yes, but I actually think that they’re an imperfect team to this point, and yet I feel as though they could be about to reach their peak at just the right time. So yeah, I’m an optimistic sports fan generally about my team, so I think we’re going to win it all.”

If Law can get into football, 12s can get into tennis

So 12s, after the Hawks win it all, what are you going to watch? Football will be over. The Seattle Mariners won’t start until spring. How about the Australian Open in January? It’s tennis’s first major of the year. You can give it a test run between the NFC Championship and the Super Bowl. If Law can get into American football, then you 12s can get into tennis.

“Do what I did with the NFL—choose yourself a player,” Law said. “Have a look at these players and think, ‘right, I’m going to follow this one.’ Somebody in the top 20, and there’s plenty of them. I mean, I like a French guy called Arthur Fils, who’s just an amazing young athlete, just so charismatic. Choose yourself somebody and follow them, because that’s what sports fandom is all about.”

Law has never been to Seattle, but seeing a Hawks game in person is on his bucket list. And if—excuse me—when they play in the Super Bowl, he won’t be able to make it to Levi’s Stadium either. So, like last Thursday night, he’ll be on his couch rocking his Seahawks gear.

“I expect to be there,” Law said, “jet-lagged like crazy from the Australian Open, and as happy as can be.”
