The Barbershop wins best podcast in KING 5 Best of Western Washington

Just a couple of months ago, former Seahawks star Marcus Trufant and his buddies Gee Scott and Terri Holliman formed a little group called The Barbershop.

They created a Facebook page and started a podcast to talk sports and life, admittedly not knowing what they were doing or what would happen.

What happened was their little group became a movement, with nearly 12,000 members now on Facebook.

And their little podcast has grown into a full-fledged success, with the voters in the KING 5 Best of Western Washington poll selecting it the best podcast of 2014.

It’s understandable, considering the guys were the only ones to land an exclusive interview with Marshawn Lynch that became a nationwide cause celebre. Among their other notable guests over the past few months were Seahawks stars Doug Baldwin, Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril, not to mention celebrities like Black Jesus star Gerald “Slink” Johnson.

The group is more than just a podcast. They’ve been putting on fundraisers, showed up at high school football games and recently launched a youth mentoring program for teen boys.

“It’s a movement. We are three gentlemen that believe in bridging the gap between all cultures, while helping to eliminate hatred, racism and social ignorance,” says Scott.

“None of us have ever spoken extensively on the radio before. None of this success would be possible if not for our faithful fans in our Barbershop Facebook group. They are the ones that help spread this movement,” he says.

Hollimon is slightly less circumspect.

“From what I’m told, The Best of Western Washington is the precursor to The Peabody. At this point, an Oscar or a Tony award isn’t too far fetched,” he jokes.

As for Trufant, the former NFL and WSU star admits he’s still adjusting to his new role as co-host.

“It’s an entirely different world behind the microphone instead of in front of it,” says Trufant.

Along with the podcast, The Barbershop is now airing on select occasions on 710 ESPN Seattle.
