A routine traffic stop for speeding on Highway 20 Saturday morning ended in a high-speed chase and stolen vehicle arrest.

Early morning Sept. 17, Sedro-Woolley police officers were on the east end of the city near Highway 20 and North Fruitdale Rd.

Two officers saw a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Highway 20.

By the time officers checked the vehicle’s speed on radar, it had slowed considerably but was still traveling 55 MPH in a 45 MPH zone. Police say the car then quickly accelerated back up to 59 MPH, now in a 35 MPH zone.

Officers tried stopping the vehicle for speeding. They got behind the car after it had turned south on Township St. The vehicle didn’t stop and began driving more recklessly.

Officers discontinued their attempts to stop the car.

Officers did see the vehicle turn west on State St. Officers, checked the area, located the vehicle on 8th St., and saw the driver running. A Sedro-Woolley police officer ran after the driver and tackled her to the ground when she would not stop attempting to run from the officer.

Officers found out the suspect had stolen the vehicle from a residence east of Sedro-Woolley.

The car was left on and still in drive when she fled on foot.

Police say the woman was also under the influence of a substance.

Police returned the vehicle to the victim of the theft.

Officers applied for and were granted a search warrant for blood evidence from the female driver. After the warrant was served, the female was booked for taking a motor vehicle without permission, attempting to elude police, DUI, and resisting arrest.

The female suspect and officer were not injured in the incident.

The suspect has prior convictions for an attempt to elude, assault 3rd, DUI, hit and run, MIP, and reckless endangerment.
