Three kayakers rescued from Snoqualmie river

Three kayakers enjoying the Snoqualmie River on a sunny afternoon found themselves needing rescue, when they were all thrown out of their kayaks and trapped against fallen wood debris.

The three women were stuck against what kayakers call a “strainer,” a natural obstacle made up of a collection of debris, usually roots, branches, or whole fallen trees that allow water to pass through but prevent other objects from continuing downstream.

Combined with the higher amount of snow melt we are seeing this year causing the river to move faster, the three women were stuck between a trunk and a fast moving river.

According to Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue (SRFR), the three women found themselves stranded just downstream of the Crescent Lake Road Overpass.

The women, who were all wearing life jackets, were pulled to safety by a rescue boat. SRFR are saying that the life jackets they were wearing likely saved their lives.

One was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained while trapped in the river. There has been no word on her condition.
