An Amtrak train and a car collided in Sumner on Monday.

The railroad crossing at Maple Street and Traffic Avenue is closed in both directions due to damage to the crossing arm, the Sumner Police Department reported.

A man in his 20s is seriously injured after his car was sliced in half by the train, according to The Tacoma News Tribune.

“The vehicle basically split in two, and half the vehicle took out the crossing arm and the crossing signal,” Carmen Palmer, a city spokesperson, told the media outlet.

Police estimate the closure will last at least several hours.

“We will provide updates as they come available,” the department wrote.
