Two men drown in Nooksack River in flipped commercial raft incident

A commercially operated river raft flipped over Tuesday afternoon throwing a guide and four customers into the Nooksack River. The guide was able to save two women, but two men drowned.

The raft flipped on the North Fork of the Nooksack River near the Snowline neighborhood in Glacier.

Court pauses Washington tribe’s evictions for ousted members

Whatcom County Sheriff dispatched swift water rescue technicians, K-9s, drone operators, border patrol and trauma and rescue units to the scene. A customs helicopter arrived 90 minutes after the raft spilled the five people into the water.

One body was located at around 7:30 p.m., submerged in a log jam a half-mile from the scene of the incident. The following morning at 7:30 a.m., the other body was located downriver of the Highway 542 bridge.

Neither body exhibited signs of trauma. One cause of death was ruled drowning by the Whatcom County Medical Examiner’s Office. The other medical examination has yet to conclude.
