Two teen boys hurt in Seattle home explosion

Police say two teen boys injured in a home explosion in North Seattle on Sunday morning were using materials for a science project for school.
The teens were experimenting with explosive materials in the living room of a home in the 2200 block of N. 106th St. when a flash occurred. Both boys were taken to Harborview Medical Center with “fragmentation wounds.”
Police say the explosion broke out windows in the living room and kitchen, blew open the back door, and propelled some debris out into the back yard.
The father of one of teens (and uncle to the other) was asleep in a back room. He told officers his son had been working on a school science project involving model rocketry.
The father said the boys were apparently trying to start a fire in the fireplace using some of the mixed rocket fuel or they were testing the mixture.
The Arson & Bomb unit responded and reported there were several completed homemade fireworks, bottle rockets, small aerial display mortars, and a skyrocket found.
Police believe that nothing more than the described items were being constructed. Completed items were seized for destruction.
