Unicorn Frappuccino lands Starbucks in hot water

Starbucks is being sued over its limited Unicorn Frappuccino.

A Brooklyn coffee shop filed a lawsuit this week alleging Starbucks’ drink infringed on its own Unicorn latte that it started selling last year.

Now The End Brooklyn says the Starbucks drink not only has a similar name but also shared visual similarities, including its bright blue and pink colors. The lawsuit says when Starbucks released its drink in April the customers of the Brooklyn shop customers believed its drink was a knockoff.

The suit asks Starbucks be ordered to turn over all profits from sales of its Unicorn Frappuccino, and that it be barred from ever using the name again.

Starbucks says the suit has no merit.

Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz reportedly said the Unicorn beverage drove significant business to the chain.

Starbucks said in a statement that the popular reception of the drink “exceeded everyone’s expectations.”

The chain says the drink was inspired by the trend of unicorn-themed food online. It started out purple with a sweet and fruity taste. It changed to pink and tart after it was stirred to mix in a blue drizzle.
