Vancouver BC police: Suspected jaywalker sets 2 officers on fire

Apr 15, 2025, 7:00 PM

A man set two Vancouver, British Columbia police officers on fire after they attempted to detain him for jaywalking last Thursday, authorities said.

The officers tried to stop the 40-year-old man, but he ran. Police determined he was wanted in connection with 10 other crimes across British Columbia. During the encounter, he set the officers’ uniforms on fire, according to police.

The officers extinguished the flames themselves, and additional officers apprehended the suspect.

One officer was treated by paramedics and is recovering. The other was not injured.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment of burns before being booked into jail.

The BC Prosecution Service approved charges against Jordan Mutual for one count of assaulting a police officer and one count of obstructing a police officer.

According to a press release, more than 35 VPD officers have been assaulted on duty since the beginning of 2025 — a 25% increase over the same period last year.
