Thousands of grocery workers across Washington voted to ratify a new union contract Friday night, avoiding a strike.

The union, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 3000, previously urged its members to approve the deal, as it offered raises, pension funding, and better staffing. The vote affected approximately 30,000 employees at QFC, Fred Meyer, Safeway, and Albertsons.

One cashier in Ballard told KING 5 why she voted to accept the contract.

“I would say that we got most of what we asked for,” she told KING 5. “We got wage increases. We got our pension fully funded.”

Specifically, wages will be increased by $2.70 over the next two years. Employees will receive fully-funded healthcare, while also having enforceable staffing language to fill more shifts and options to pick up extra hours

The contract lasts until 2027.

Just a few weeks ago, 97% of union members voted to authorize a strike. If passed, the contract would run through 2027.
