Boise-based WinCo Foods is recalling two different salsa bean dip trays distributed to eight states, including Washington, due to a potential pest contaminant.

This decision came after a video went viral showing a jar of Mezzetta peperoncini with a dead mouse inside.

The following products are being recalled because they include peperoncini from G.L. Mezzetta:

  • WinCo Foods Salsa Bean Dip Tray Express, UPC 2-67173-#####, net weight 54 oz.
  • WinCo Foods Salsa Bean Dip Tray, 16 inch Catering Tray (by special order only), UPC 2-67240-#####, net weight 104 oz.

WinCo Foods was notified by G.L. Mezzetta about a single lot of the Golden Greek Peperoncini being recalled due to a potential pest contamination that was caught on film by a consumer and ultimately posted to social media. Peperoncini was used as an ingredient in the WinCo Foods Salsa Bean Dip Trays, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Consumer video raises concerns over recalled peperoncini

The TikTok video shows a person holding up a jar of Mezzetta peperoncini that appears to contain a dead mouse.

“Public service announcement: don’t buy this brand of peperoncini; I have a dead mouse in mine,” the user posted to social media.

“WinCo Foods did not have or use any product with evidence of pests included in the jar, nor has the company received any complaints regarding potential pests or illness related to the bean dip trays to date,” the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated.

The recalled WinCo Foods products include ready-made deli-style items that have a short shelf life, meaning the product is not expected to still be in consumers’ homes. Additionally, WinCo removed all products that may have been made using peperoncini from retail stores.

The FDA noted that no pests were observed during production of the bean dip trays, and no complaints have been received. WinCo Foods stated it initiated the recall in order to provide transparency to customers and prioritize food safety.

The recall currently spans retail stores in Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.
