Washington Air National Guardsman to receive Silver Star

Apr 30, 2012, 12:29 PM | Updated: 2:37 pm

A Washington Air National Guardsman will be honored with a
Silver Star for heroism during an ambush by Taliban
insurgents in Afghanistan last year.

Sgt. Tavis Delaney can be heard rallying his fellow
soldiers to storm a nearby hillside toward more than 200
Taliban insurgents near the Pakistani border.

“How far is the bomb going to be?”

The Air National Guard says during the 13 hour firefight
Delaney “bravely stood upright” exposing himself to
enemy fire in order to call in air strikes.

“We are incredibly proud of TSgt Delaney and the 116th
ASOS. Time after time, they have been the decisive
difference on the battlefield, and TSgt Delaney is
deserving of this high honor,” said Major General Timothy
J. Lowenberg, the Adjutant General and commander of the
Washington National Guard.

Delaney is credited with saving the lives of more than 64
coalition forces.

Footage of the battle
was caught on a helmet cam. Delaney
is only the third Washington National Guardsman to receive
a
Silver Star for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
