Washington gets $45M in VA grants to fight veteran homelessness

More than $45 million in federal funding is headed to Washington state to help homeless veterans and veterans at risk of losing their homes.
The Department of Veterans Affairs said it has awarded grants to 17 community organizations across Washington for Fiscal Year 2027 as part of a record-setting national investment.
“This funding is part of a record-high $1.17 billion in grants awarded to 680 organizations across the country to fight Veteran homelessness,” according to a news release from the department Friday. “The grants follow VA’s success in housing 51,936 homeless Veterans in Fiscal Year 2025, the highest number in seven years.”
“VA medical centers across Washington remain committed to ensuring Veterans have access to safe, stable housing and the supportive services they need to thrive,” said Dr. Thomas Bundt, Medical Center Director of VA Puget Sound Health Care System. “These grants strengthen our partnerships with community organizations and help us reach Veterans where they are, providing resources that make a meaningful difference in their lives.”
The Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) grants will fund programs to prevent veterans from losing their homes, rapidly rehouse those who already have, and in some cases connect veterans with more suitable housing.
The Grant and Per Diem (GPD) program will support transitional housing, wraparound services, and specialized housing for women veterans and those who are chronically mentally ill, frail or elderly, the release stated.
