The first case of monkeypox in Washington has officially been confirmed.

The department is working to identify others who may have been exposed.

Monkeypox symptoms include a rash and fever, and people typically recover within two to four weeks.

“Despite the news of multiple cases nationwide, monkeypox is a very rare disease in the United States and the Washington resident who tested positive does not pose a public health risk,” wrote Umair A. Shah, MD, MPH, Secretary of Health, in a news release.
