In a rush to get to the mall? The Washington State Patrol is waiting for you. Troopers have begun cracking down with a new emphasis patrol aimed at slowing speeding shoppers.

“This time of the year right before Thanksgiving all the way to the end of the year, it’s holiday shopping. We have a lot of shoppers on the roadway and some are trying to get to the mall quite quickly,” says Trooper Mark Francis.”

Francis says at least half the drivers stopped for speeding during this time of year say they’re on their way to the mall.

Troopers will be out in force in Snohomish, Skagit and Whatcom County close to shopping centers both along the I-5 corridor and state highways.

“We just stopped a guy going 110 in a 60 near the Tulalip outlet malls,” Francis says. “He said he was going shopping.”

Along with speeding, Troopers will also be looking for aggressive drivers, texting while driving and other violations.

“Our goal is reducing serious injury and fatality collisions by changing people’s behavior. And you know, our goal would be that people hear this and know, hey I won’t be speeding because the state patrol is out,” he says.
