Five candidates are running to unseat incumbent Chris Reykdal for the nonpartisan position. Among those, Maia Espinoza is leading at 24%, followed by Ron Higgins (20%), Dennis Wick (6%), David Spring (5%), and Stan Lippmann (3%).

Reykdal was first elected to superintendent in 2016, narrowly edging out Erin Jones 50.5% to 49.5%. Jones had beaten Reykdal in the August 2016 primary by a 25.7% to 20.95% margin, in a field of nine total candidates.

Higgins and Espinoza have both voiced opposition to the comprehensive sexual education curriculum signed into law by Gov. Jay Inslee, and supported by Reykdal. All six candidates spoke on their commitments to teachers in their statements submitted to the state voting guide.
