If it feels like the nicest weather keeps showing up during the work week only to disappear by the weekend, you’re not imagining things.

Back in August, I wrote about the remarkable run of cooler-than-normal weekends that repeatedly interrupted stretches of warm summer weather. Now that it’s September, I’ve been looking for the odd pattern of “bad luck” to break. It really hasn’t.

Wednesday was easily the warmest day of the work week and a reminder that late summer warmth is still possible, with a high of 78° in Seattle.

But the ridge of high pressure responsible for Wednesday’s sunshine is already weakening, allowing cooler marine air to surge inland. That shift begins Thursday with widespread morning clouds and temperatures dropping back into the lower 70s. A weak convergence zone could squeeze out a few evening sprinkles, though most lowland locations should remain dry.

Friday continues the cooling trend. Morning stratus clouds and pockets of drizzle are likely before some afternoon sunshine develops. Even with a few breaks of sun, highs will struggle to reach 70 degrees in Seattle.

Then, there’s the weekend ahead.

A developing area of low pressure is expected to cross southern Washington and Oregon on Saturday, bringing a good shot of rain from about Seattle southward.

And highs on Saturday will only be in the 60s.

Showers should gradually diminish Sunday morning, with lingering showers more isolated through the day. By Sunday afternoon, many areas should be mainly dry.

Then — no surprise! — once again next week, when most of us are at work or in school, we’ll see warmer temperatures back well into the 70s for many spots around the Sound, with more sunshine!
