A new report finds Microsoft continues to barely register
in
the smartphone market, with Windows Phones making up just
3.8 percent of the industry.

The survey of 30,000 smartphone
users by comScore shows phones powered by Google’s Android
operating system continue to dominate, with a market share
of 51.6 percent. Apple’s iPhones remain a strong segment
with
32.4 percent of the market.

It’s just the latest disappointing news for Microsoft.
Finnish phone maker Nokia made a big bet on Windows Phone
with the Nokia 900 earlier this year. Despite selling over
6 million units since it launched, Nokia has
cut the price in half. Microsoft recently
announced current Windows Phones won’t run the upcoming
Windows Phone 8 when it launches in October.

The results come on the same day the company announced it
has officially completed work on its Windows 8 operating
system. Todd Bishop at GeekWire.com reports computer makers
will now be able to build Windows 8 PCs in advance of the
Oct. 26 general availability of the new operating system.

“Windows 8 RTM is a major milestone for Microsoft, which
is counting on Windows 8 to keep its operating system
relevant in a technology world increasingly centered on
tablets and other forms of mobile computing,” Bishop
writes.
